We now that the tobacco smoke contains nicotine, a substance, that increases the chemical in neurons of the brain, increasing memory and alertness, temporarily. Recent studies have also shown that nicotine promotes feeling of pleasure.

Nicotine, a substance of the tobacco smoke, is one of the most addictive substances. When the tobacco is smoked, most of the nicotine is destroyed by the heat, however, a small levels of it is sufficient to cause strong psychological dependency

Of late, some nations have begun anti-smoking advertisements to educate the effects of tobacco. However it's effectiveness is still widely debated. According to health experts, advertising of tobacco products increases tobacco consumption, but there is a significant find that there is no effect of tobacco advertising on smoking. Children of smoking parents are more likely to smoke than children with non-smoking parents. Famous people of the past and the present use cigarettes or cigars or pipes to enhance their image in the society.

The tobacco smoking scenes in movies has been linked with adolescent smoking initiation. The movies tend to influence a high cross section of both children and adults. There have been recent laws that has been brought in that asks to reduce the depiction of smoking in television shows or in the movies, especially for those shows that are aimed at children. Its also applicable for characters in cartoon shows.
